Couples can approach
us direct or be referred by their solicitors or the court. If you have solicitors
you will be encouraged to seek their advice in between mediation sessions
if you have any doubts as to your rights. As mediators we are not able to
give specific advice, only general information.
You will then attend a general information session where more details can
be given and to allow you and us the opportunity to see if mediation might
be the way forward. There is no charge for this session.
After this the mediation proper starts and this takes as many sessions as
necessary, but typically we find three to five sessions are all that is needed.
A session lasts up to an hour and a half and during it we try to ensure that
there is open and free discussion which at all times is kept strictly confidential
and cannot be used in any later court proceedings.
Any understanding that is eventually reached will only be binding after you
have had the opportunity for legal advice from your solicitor. We prepare
a summary of those proposals and any financial documents that have been provided
to assist the solicitors in making a legally binding document.
Underlying the whole process is the fact that it is your voice that is being
heard not a position created on your behalf by others and there is instant
communication in a regulated environment.
